Orthopedic Medical Team & Wheelchair Donation
Qinyang, Henan, China

In this trip, we provided free orthopedic surgeries, physical therapy,
medical education, and wheelchairs to help those who have congenital or acquired
lower extremity deformities to stand and walk more normally.

Dr. James Lau, our team leader, is sitting right in the middle of the front row.
The medical team has 18 people including surgeons, anesthesiologists, OT and ward nurses,
physical therapist, clerk, coordinator.
The 8-person team in orange shirts are the wheelchair team members.
The Lord called us from different parts of the world: USA,HK,Australia,Canada,
And Himself being our ultimate leader in this mission trip.

Cases Sharing 病例分享
These are cases that I have never seen in the USA...excuse my lack of experiences, but the severe of deformity, adaptation of patients to their living, choice of procedures, environment with limited resources...etc are all very
amazing and challenging!!
Chinese people's adaption is unbelivable! Foot and ankle are deformed, legs are bent, heels lifted 5inches
from the ground, etc... and still trying to walk, although limping, to help reduce family's burden!

Although each of us used our talents and special experiences to help these patients,
however, without God calling us to come and work together,
it was impossible to carry out the surgeries and help these patients.

Where are the "After-Pictures"?
As I am showing the pictures from my camera, many people asked where are the after-surgery-pictures.
Here is what healthcare providers have to face after treatment:
Lots of Waiting and Patience and let God do the healing...
We may have some post-op x-rays and casts pictures...
But the outcome and patients's walking wont be available until few months later.

Challenges -

Poor patients, this is their gurney, no cushioning at all!!
Poor staff too- no no handle, no side bars, no breaks, weak steering...

Medications. For those who can read chinese: knowing the translation is difficult enough, knowing how to
pronounce the words (in Cantonese) is another challenge... Now, lets read it in Mandarin!!
Here is a math question for the students&residents: Bupivicaine: 5ml:37.5mg What is the percentage?
The IV pole hanging glass saline bottle, the 12-bulb-shadowless light but unable to focus, the cushionless surgical bed,
the non-adjustable steers under the bed, the wooden arm-board, the anesthesia machine...
This comment is being quite technical...
Natural sky-light x-ray viewer, no intra-op fluoro nor x-rays, no cannulated system, no WB films...
The bilateral calcaneal lateral slide osteotomy and 1st MTPJ fusion and triple arthrodesis and 5th hammertoe
repair is not bad huh? Here is why you need to know the approx screw length when doing osteotomies, you
don't always have a fluoroscan to make sure all threads cross the cut but not entering the joint. Also, there is
no cannulated system neither...so you start with a 3.2 drill bit, and it better be right the first time!

Left: at the motel meeting room - we began each day with a morning devotion and complete each day with a
meeting and time of prayers.
Right: in the hospital - before we seperated into functional groups and start our work, we have a group prayer.
However, in China we cannot do this in public. Therefore, our team of 26 people always meet in this room, close the door, and ask for God's guidance and togetherness for each day.
Wheelchair Donation Ceremony 輪椅捐贈
March 20, 2009
The orange shirt wheelchair team members assembled 550 wheelchairs, took them to the plaza,
lined them up nicely, and did thorough quality control in 4 days!!
Simple design wheelchairs with tool on the footstep, manuel, extra bolts & nuts in the bag for easy maintainence.
Notice they either carry a stick or a special chair to help them get around...
Patient selection is done by the Chinese Red Cross.

Relax Time 小休時間 ...
We made the very best use of the 12 days, most days ran from 7am to 10pm...
but managed to spend time together, visit museums, eat enough, and have fun too...

The Henan Medical Ministry Committee was a ministry of the HIS Foundation established in 1993. Its tasks were to
improve medical services of rural clinics in the remote area of the Province of Henan. The committee worked closely with
the Red Cross Society of Province of Henan. Funds and medical equipment were delivered directly to the clinics.
Every mission was accompanied and supervised by our committee members.
